The Global Classroom is an initiative to promote global learning that aims at providing students and educators with new pedagogy that encourages cross-disciplinary cooperation. The Global Classroom was introduced for the first time at Columbia University’s Earth Institute in 2008 by members from a MacArthur Foundation supported International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice.
The goal is to teach students about the issues that are affecting us all, whether it’s climate change, global famine or the need for advancement in medicine. It also encourages students to forge careers that address these problems, taking a collaborative instead of competitive approach to problem solving.
GC courses are co-developed and co-taught with instructors and students from internationally-based institutions. This unique pedagogy can be used for undergraduate and graduate courses.
